Scientists discover 500 BC sky map

When the carving of the Great Bear constellation on a stone, made around 500 BC at Mudumala village in Mahbubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh were discovered, scientists were suitably astounded.
They began to wonder how ancient Indian astrologers could tell exactly how stars and constellations were grouped without the help of modern devices such as the telescope.

The mystery was unravelled when scientists discovered an ancient sky map in Hyderabad.

The sky map, which is probably the oldest in Asia, was carved out by megalithic Indians with astounding accuracy.

The map represents the seven stars also known as the saptarishi mandal, which have for ages been used to pinpoint the North (for the Pole star, located above the North Pole lies opposite the Ursa Major or the Great Bear).

According to Reader, Department of History, Central University Hyderabad, Dr K P Rao, "The discovery of the sky map indicates that from olden days itself the Indians had adequate knowledge of Astronomical science. In fact they used this knowledge to construct monuments based on the directions denoted by stars and constellations."

According to Historians, this is the only sky map to be unearthed in India, probably even South Asia.

Over ages the stone which has the sky map carved on it, is being protected by the local folk.

Eighty menhirs (standing stones) and several hundred smaller stones surround the map. There is a local folklore, which talks about how these stones are cursed men and cattle.

"With this belief the local people do not even dare to cause any damage to the stones and so the sky map remained intact over ages," says Dr Rao.

A detailed study revealed that the megalithic Indians had good knowledge of solar trajectories and the sky map was used to determine the calendar and the seasons with precise information about sun rise-sun set with exact directions.

This information was expected to be used predominantly for agricultural operations.

"Necessity is the mother of all inventions" is a well-known proverb. And to know how much it is true, just read about the various innovations that people from different walks of life have come up with at NDTV India Innovates.

Its amazing to note that most of the innovations have been brainwaves of people who haven't had access to resources.

Kudos to NDTV for making a sincere attempt to bring these people under the spotlight.

Reservation: Do we really need it?

"History repeats itself" is a very popular statement and how true it is. And this time around, it has been pretty quick too.

In 1989, when the VP Singh government wanted to implement the recommendations of the Mandal Commission, there were widespread protests all over the country. The commission had recommended that reservations be implemented in government jobs and universities. The protests were so violent that many students attempted self-immolation, and many lost their precious lives in the process.

The Congress government has not learnt its lesson from that episode and is considering reserving nearly 50% of the seats in IIMs and IITs for the backward classes. I acknowledge the fact that reservations are essential towards the uplift and empowerment of people from less privileged castes. But to have it as high as 50% is really atrocious. I firmly believe that deserving students would definitely earn themselves their due recognition.

At present the education system is too unorganised and this has helped various politicians to exploit the system and run their own educational institutions and make huge money every year in the name of capitation fees, donations, and name whatever. The system is not transparent and thus there is every chance that the reservation policy would be misused more often than not.

Lets hope that we don't lose a few more lives protesting this proposal by the government.

Strikes, Frustrating ...

Strike - Mass refusal by employees to perform work due to certain grievances.

Strikes are really frustrating and become all the more when they affect the life of the common man. And today they have become a tool in the hands of people with vested interests who hold the entire industry/nation/economy at ransom.

The latest addition to the list is the one being carried out by the various unions of the SBI. The grievance being insufficient pension. Pension is a means by which the employer expresses gratitude to his employees after their retirement for having served him loyally and thus tries to secure their future. But, there is no obligation on part of the employer to pay pension.

I really don't understand why people want to strike work and shirk from their present day responsibility? Are they not responsible for what happens today? Counting chickens before they actually hatch is not a good trend and the striking employees definitely don't seem top realize that.

The banking industry is the backbone of any economy and SBI being a premier banking institution in India should have ensured that the strike didn't happen in the first place, leave alone affect the common man. Who is now going to take the responsibility for the huge losses that have been incurred by various institutions because of this strike.

As I write this blog news trickles that the demands of the striking employees has been accepted by the government and the strike has been called of after crippling the economy for 7 days.

PS: I do support the idea strikes if the grievances are really genuine and compelling.

Mercy ...

It's just April and Chennai is already reeling under some very high temperatures. I really can't imagine how we Chennaites are going to cope with the heat in the month of May.

Hey, Sun god... Show some mercy on us.

For the time-being, have to be content seeing this pic with lots of rain-bearing clouds and hoping that we get to see such sights in the coming few weeks..

Pogo TV...

POGO... Most of you would have just seen a glimpse of this TV channel while scanning through the numerous channels available today. And many who know about the existence of this channel would term this as a channel only for kids. Of course, this channel is for kids and with its amazing variety of programs, it definitely is a great source of edutainment for today's stressed kids.

There are quite a few programs that even adults can enjoy, and Just for Laughs Gags and Takeshi's Castle are my pick amongst the lot.

Takeshi's Castle
It's a hilarious and totally surreal Japanese game show. There's no script (literally, except for the occasional rib-tickling commentary by Javed Jaffery), just lots of laughs as contestants try to conquer a series of challenging games. The contestants enjoy the challenges and it's a treat to watch them face each of these hilarious but physically challenging game with a smile on their faces.

Just for Laughs Gags
This is candid camera at its best... 30 minutes of non-stop laughter where the TV crew come out with innovative ideas to get the best reactions from people. There are many such programs aired by various channels which try to imitate, but end up as gimmicks. Unlike other programs where people lose their temper, this programme ensures that they end up smiling (most times, the smile is a sheepish one) before the camera once the trick is revealed.

I really enjoy watching these programs as it helps me relax after a day filled with hard-work, tension, and pressures in today's highly competitive world. Its really amazing that this channel can bring out so many programs that are content rich, thereby being entertaining and educating at the same time. Its high time that other channels took cue from this channel.
